Designed by Richard Hague and his students at the Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Research Group at the University of Nottingham, UK, this prosthetic arm shows how 3D printers can create a strong structure, mobile joints and delicate sensors – like spiral metal touch detectors – all in one process.

The ability to 3D-print a variety of materials – using electron beams to fuse metals as well as laser beams to melt and fuse PLAstics – suits the process well to making tough knee implants that can take the daily punishment dealt by human locomotion.

Scanning a skull damaged by injury or ravaged by diseases like cancer allows precision replacement bone to be printed, as here with these maxillofacial implants. One of the first such implants saw a woman get a whole new jawbone.

If you can encourage cells to be deposited by a 3D print head you can make biomaterials too. Here, animal cells have been printed in the shape of a bladder and a blood vessel – giving us hints of a future in which people will be tissue-typed and given replacement organs on demand.

Find an antique blueprint and a 3D printer can bring history to life. Here engineer Peter Nicholson, based in Swindon, UK, has recreated the Bristol Mercury, the gorgeous radial engine that powered the Gloster Gladiator biplane in the 1930s and the Bristol Blenheim light bomber in the second world war.
